Having won two individual titles, and enjoying a lead with about a mile to go, Park City's Ben Saarel seemingly had nothing to run for.
But his coach, Jeff Wyant, told the Park City runner he was on pace to break the state record in the 5K, and suddenly Saarel found another gear. Saarel finished in 14 minutes, 56.7 seconds to win by 34 seconds, but he missed former Judge Memorial standout Luke Puskedra's all-time best by about 2 seconds.
The Ogden boys won a second straight team title, running the fastest combined time in school history.
