Florham Park, N.J. •Tim Tebow might add a new job title to an already lengthy list.

The do-it-all backup quarterback could see time at running back in the New York Jets' banged-up backfield Sunday against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

"That's a possibility," coach Rex Ryan said Thursday. "The thing about Tim — with him being a football player like we've always talked about — by playing quarterback, he knows all the positions. So, can you plug him in at running back? Can you plug him in at tight end or whatever?

"I think the answer is yes."

The Jets are a bit short-handed at the position with backups Joe McKnight (sprained left ankle) and Bilal Powell (separated right shoulder) likely out for the game. That leaves only starter Shonn Greene and rookie Jonathan Grimes, who has yet to play, as the team's only running backs. Lex Hilliard is the remaining fullback after the Jets waived John Conner on Wednesday.

Around the league

Cowboys • Felix Jones finally gets a chance to be the first option again for Dallas.

The fifth-year running back and former first-round pick certainly had to be patient. He had only three carries in the first four games this season.

With DeMarco Murray out because of a sprained left foot, Jones is set to start Sunday when the Cowboys (2-3) visit Carolina.

When Murray broke his right ankle late last season, Jones responded with consecutive 100-yard games. Murray got hurt last week at Baltimore, and Jones finished that game with 18 rushes for 92 yards with a 22-yard touchdown.

Eagles • A coroner said Thursday that an accidental heroin overdose killed Garrett Reid, the son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid.

Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek announced the findings with investigators, who said numerous syringes and needles were discovered in a gym bag in Garrett Reid's room.

Lions • Detroit has signed cornerback Alphonso Smith and released running back Keiland Williams.

Detroit is desperate for help at cornerback because Bill Bentley and Jacob Lacey missed Thursday's practice. Bentley was held out with a shoulder injury and Lacey because of a concussion. —
