State colleges: No. 5-ranked BYU outlasts Gonzaga in women's soccer

The No. 5-ranked BYU women's soccer team defeated Gonzaga 4-1 in a West Coast Conference game Friday in Provo.

Cloee Colohan had a goal and an assist as the Cougars (14-1-1, 3-0-1) won in front of 4,557 fans, the second-largest home crowd this season.

BYU's Lindsi Cutshall scored in the ninth minute, and the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Gonzaga scored an equalizer early in the second half before the Cougars pulled away with goals from Colohan, Michele Murphy and Jessica Ringwood.

Gonzaga fell to 6-8-1 and 0-3-0.

USC 1, Utah 0 • In Los Angeles, the Utes outshot the Trojans 12-9 but came up short in the Pac-12 game. USC's Jordan Marada scored in the 34th minute from 8 yards out off a cross from Elizabeth Eddy.

Goalkeeper Lindsey Luke made four stops for Utah (8-5-2, 3-4-0). Caroline Stanley had five saves for USC (5-7-3, 2-3-2).

Utah State 1, San Jose State 0 • In Logan, Jennifer Flynn scored in the 56th minute, giving Utah State coach Heather Cairns her 100th career win. Flynn scored off an assist from Lauren Roundy, and senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford made three saves to earn the save for USU (10-2-6, 5-0-2 WAC). The win gives Cairns a 100-77-25 record in her 10 years at the helm of the Aggie program.

Montana 1, SUU 0 • In Cedar City, Paytyn Wheeler's goal in the 66th minute lifted Montana to the Big Sky Conference win.

Rocky Mountain 3, Westminster 1 • In Billings, Mont., Rocky Mountain scored three first-half goals on the way to its win in the Frontier Conference game. Justine Jones scored in the 81st minute for the Griffins (10-4-1, 2-2-1).

Women's volleyball

USC 3, Utah 0 • In Los Angeles, the No. 7-ranked Trojans powered past the Utes 25-14, 25-14, 25-22. Shelby Dalton led Utah (11-12, 2-8) with seven kills.

Utah Valley 3, Chicago State 0 • In Orem, Erica Nish had nine kills as the Wolverines (12-7, 4-0) won the Great West Conference match for their fifth straight victory.

SLCC 3, USU-Eastern 0 • In Price, Maddie Bushman had 12 kills to lead the Bruins to the win, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

Men's tennis

In Las Vegas, BYU's Travis Fillmore and Francis Sargeant advanced to the men's doubles quarterfinals at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, beating Utah State's Brandon Nielsen and Fredrik Peterson, 8-6. The BYU duo will face Utah's Slim Hamza and Devin Lane in Saturday's quarterfinals.
