A man was shot in the chest Friday night outside an apartment complex in West Valley City.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in the parking lot outside the complex, just west of the Arctic Circle at 4073 W. 4100 South, said West Valley City police Lt. Dalan Taylor. The 18-year-old victim stumbled to the Arctic Circle, where someone inside called for help, Taylor said.

The victim was flown to the hospital in critical condition with a single gunshot wound to his chest, Taylor added.

Police set up a containment around the area with help from Salt Lake City, Murray and South Jordan officers. They detained about 10 people who were in the area and as of Saturday morning, were in the process of sorting through them and interviewing 15 witnesses from the Arctic Circle, Taylor said.

"We're not sure if we have a suspect or not in this group," Taylor added.

Investigators do not yet have a clear idea why the shooting occurred or whether the victim lived at the apartment complex. He was conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital, but Taylor could not comment on what the man said.
