Utah forecast: Wind, rain — and snow through Thursday

Gusty winds, rain and snow pelted northern Utah on Tuesday, and more of the same was expected for Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters warned of gusts topping 60 mph along the Wasatch Front, ushering in valley rains — and at elevations of around 6,000 feet and above, snow. Indeed, the NWS issued a Winter Weather Advisory along the mountainous spine of northern Utah through Thursday afternoon.

The affected area will stretch from Logan and Brigham City south through Ogden, Salt Lake City, Park City and Provo to Nephi, and into the western Uinta Mountains as well. Snow was predicted to fall in depths of 2 to 7 inches along the peaks and high slopes, forecasters said.

As of Tuesday, Randolph in northeastern Utah had already reported 9 inches of snow, while nearby Laketown measured 11 inches. Twelve inches had accumulated at Snowbasin, while the Wasatch towns of Liberty and Eden had 10 inches and 6 inches, respectively. Logan's benches reported 3 inches of snow.

High winds of 30-40 mph, too, will continue in northern Utah, with gusts topping 70 mph along some ridge lines.

Thunderstorms and rain showers were to linger over the region at least through Wednesday as high temperatures fell into the upper 40s and low 50s.

Southern Utah, meantime, expected a milder, more autumn-like forecast with highs around 70 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Air quality statewide was graded "Green," or healthy, according to the Utah Division of Air Quality.

Salt Lake City's high Wednesday was predicted to hit 49, down from Tuesday's forecast for 54 degrees; Ogden expected 48 degrees; Provo, 50; Logan, 46; Wendover, 44; Duchesne, 51; Cedar City, 57; St. George 70; and Moab 67 degrees.
