With the temperature at 98 degrees at the time of Sunday's first pitch at Smith's Ballpark, the Salt Lake Bees and the Sacramento River Cats withstood the heat and went back and forth until the very end, when Sacramento came out on top 14-11.
The Bees drew first blood, scoring their first run in the first inning, and had a two-run lead heading into the sixth inning, but the River Cats would not let them pull away.
A tie game going into the ninth, the Bees gave up three runs and Sacramento ran away with the win. The Bees are now on a three-game losing streak.
After the game, Bees manager Keith Johnson could be heard yelling at his players, but he declined to address the media.
Turning Point • With the game tied in the top of the ninth, Orlando Calixte hit a two-run homer to give Sacramento the lead. Chris Shaw added one more to that lead as he hit a double and was then brought home by Ryan Lollis' double.
Bees MVP • Cesar Puello went 5 for 6 and scored three of the Bees 11 runs.
Hidden Hero • Dustin Ackley went 1 for 5 but was responsible for two of the Bees 11 runs, two stolen bases one of which was home plate and was walked twice.
Angel Angle • Right-handed pitcher Parker Bridwell was called up to Anaheim on Sunday afternoon. He started for the Angels in their matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he struck out eight and allowed two hits and two runs in 61/3 innings.
What's next • The Bees will play the first game of their four game road series against the Reno 51's on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. MDT.
