Rain and snow and soggy autumn leaves — a Utah forecast Robert Frost may have appreciated by observing, "leaf subsides to leaf. . . . So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay."

The National Weather Service more tersely predicts gray skies, valley rains and snow in the Wasatch and western Uinta mountains Thursday, a forecast mirroring that for Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect through Thursday afternoon for a section of northern and eastern Utah stretching from Logan south through Brigham City, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo and Nephi and east to Vernal.

Forecasters predicted up to a foot of mountain snow through Thursday, added to 2-5 inches expected on Wednesday. Valley totals, predominantly along the benches, were pegged at 1-3 inches.

Northern Utah's soggy forecast called for high temperatures Thursday in the mid-30s while overnight lows were expected to be near freezing. Southern Utahns, meanwhile, looked for drier weather under partly cloudy skies with highs in the upper-60s and overnight lows around 40 degrees.

The Utah Division of Air Quality was flying a "Green," or healthy breathing banner statewide.

Salt Lake City anticipated a high temperature Thursday of 43, down 2 degrees from Wednesday's forecast; Ogden looked for 43 and 46 degrees; Provo 45 and 47; Logan 42 and 44; Wendover 44 and 46; Duchesne 46 and 52; Cedar City 50 and 54; St. George 66 and 71; and Moab 57 and 66 degrees.
