State colleges: Utah volleyball trumps Oregon State 3-1

The Utes won their conference matchup against Oregon State 3-1 (25-20, 25-12, 19-25, 25-18) on Friday in Salt Lake City. Sophomore Erin Redd led Utah with 12 kills and a career-high .706 hitting percentage. The Utes outhit the Beavers .328 to .139.

Morgan Odale had 11 kills, and Chelsey Schofield posted a season-high 17 digs. The win put Utah at .500 with a 12-12 overall record (3-8 Pac-12).

Men's basketball

New Mexico Highlands 89, Westminster 85 • The Griffins lost in Las Vegas, N.M., in their season-opening exhibition game.

Men's golf

The University of Utah men's team sits at second place midway through the second round — postponed due to darkenss — at the Price Give 'Em Five Invitational in El Paso, Texas.

As some of the golfers to finish both rounds, junior Casey Halliday and freshman Jonathon Thomas finished with a 144.

Swimming and diving

Cal 158, BYU 118 • The Cougars' women's team lost to the Bruins in Provo. In the closest race of the night, BYU lost the 200 medley relay by 1/100th of a second.

Women's soccer

Montana 1, UVU 0 • The Wolverines lost in Orem after allowing a goal in the 43rd minute. Montana outshot UVU 19-7 in the Wolverines' nonconference finale, which was also senior night.

UVU goalkeeper Lauren Sack had seven saves, but the Wolverines produced only one shot on goal.
