Man charged with June Summit County stabbing

Summit County prosecutors Monday charged a 26-year-old with a June stabbing that left one man seriously injured.

Prosecutors charged Patrick Ryan Flaherty with one count of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, according to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court.

Authorities allege that Flaherty stabbed his victim, who was also a co-worker, during a scuffle at a Summit County party on June 22, according to charging documents.

Prosecutors said Flaherty and his victim had gotten into an altercation earlier in the evening when Flaherty made some derogatory comments "about African Americans and homosexuals." The victim confronted Flaherty and punched him in the face, according to charging documents.

Later when Flaherty approached the man who punched him to apologize, the man asked Flaherty if he knew what he was apologizing for. A scuffle ensued and police said Flaherty pulled a kitchen knife and stabbed the man in the chest and the thigh before Flaherty fled.

Police found Flaherty a short time later hiding inside a nearby bar. Flaherty eventually unlocked the door and surrendered to police. Authorities have said both men were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
