DVD • In "Brave," Pixar contributes to Disney's princess roster by introducing Merida (voiced by "Boardwalk Empire's" Kelly Macdonald), the headstrong teen daughter of a medieval Scottish clan leader, Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly), who constantly butts heads with her mother, the proper queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson).
When Merida meets a witch (voiced by Julie Walters) and seeks a potion to "change my fate," she gets more than either she or Elinor can bear. What unfolds is a charming take on mother-daughter relationships, loaded with all the humor and visual flourishes for which Pixar is famous.
The DVD package contains hours of extras, with deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage. But if you want a real peek inside the minds at Pixar, this week also brings "Pixar Short Film Collection 2," which includes not only 12 short films (including Oscar nominees "Presto," "Day & Night" and "La Luna") but revealing student films by Pixar directors John Lasseter ("Toy Story"), Andrew Stanton ("Finding Nemo") and Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.").
