Utah State basketball: Aggies put on a clinic in easy win

Logan • Utah State is ready for prime time.

That much was clear as Kyisean Reed hammered home an alley-oop from Preston Medlin, his fourth slam of the first half. The Aggies basketball team toyed with Simon Fraser on offense on Saturday night, shooting their way to an easy 92-56 win in their final exhibition before the real deal begins next week.

Of course, the team still was talking about its room to improve, even after a dominant shooting performance.

"I think we're almost there," said Reed, who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. "We've got details to worry about right now. We're playing hard, and we're doing a lot of big-picture, like we're winning the games, but we've got details to worry about now."

One thing that wasn't a work in progress was Utah State's shooting touch: The Aggies fired away for 60 percent from the field and made half of their shots from 3-point range. The blistering pace was set early, as the Aggies shot better than 70 percent in the first half.

Medlin led the way for the second straight outing with 18 points, scoring on both long jumpers and athletic cuts to the hoop. Jarred Shaw chipped in a dozen at center, going 4 for 6 from the field as Simon Fraser struggled to match up with his length.

The backcourt was active as a unit: TeNale Roland made the most of his start at point, scoring nine points and getting nine assists against only one turnover. Marvin Jean also showed some shooting prowess off the bench, going 3 for 4 on his 3-pointers.

Reed made it more of a highlight reel than a game with show-stopping dunks that left the exhibition crowd roaring.

"Kyisean was really active," coach Stew Morrill said. "He's unbelievably active on some plays. He causes havoc out there with his athletic ability."

The Aggies did have an early defensive lapse, allowing the Clan to score 17 points in the first nine minutes. But the Aggies clamped down on Simon Fraser's open looks, holding their Canadian visitor to only 32.8 percent shooting. Utah State held a firm 20-rebound margin, as seven players grabbed at least five boards.

Utah State opens its season at the Spectrum on Nov. 10, hosting Idaho State.
