South Salt Lake police were investigating an apparent homicide at an apartment early Sunday.

Police spokesman Gary Keller said officers responded about 4:05 a.m. to the residence at 2389 S. 300 East when someone called 911 to report shots fired.

When officers arrived, Keller said they found a 43-year-old woman dead inside with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He said the death was being investigated as a homicide until investigators determined otherwise. An autopsy was planned.

Keller said officers had to obtain a search warrant to enter the apartment after they determined the woman was dead inside.

The woman's name has not yet been released pending the notification of her family.

Anyone with information is asked to call South Salt Lake police at 801-840-4000.
