Salutes, musical performances honor Utah veterans

Numerous Veterans Day events are planned along the Wasatch Front through Monday. They include:

Clearfield ceremony

The Clearfield High School AFJROTC will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony. Students will recognize Clearfield alumnus Rocky Olson, a Vietnam veteran who wrote about his combat experience in Sgt. Rock, Last Warrior Standing.

Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's National Chamber Foundation will host a hiring fair for veterans and military spouses. Interested employers and job seekers should register at Walk-in job seekers are allowed. (Veterans must provide military identification.)

University of Utah commemoration

U. of U. events will include a panel discussion, "Korea: The Forgotten War;" a full dress military ceremony; and a rifle salute at 11 a.m. Call 801-581-6773 for information.

Farmington events

Col. Jay Hess, a former prisoner of war, will visit Knowlton Elementary to share his military experiences. The school will continue its recognition of veterans with a patriotic music program by first-graders at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, and again at 9 a.m. on Nov. 9.

Provo tribute and lunch

Provo City, Provo Veterans Council, Timpview High School and the Provo Kiwanis Club will sponsor a Veterans Day tribute.

Veterans Day with the Utah Food Bank

Join Goldman Sachs and The Mission Continues to process food donations and prepare packages for families in need throughout the community. Visit for information.

Spaghetti dinner

Magna VFW Post No. 7398 will hold a fund-raising Veterans Day spaghetti dinner. Dinners are $6 per plate, $3 for veterans. This event is open to adults age 21 and older. Proceeds will provide resources care-giving to Magna veterans.

Orem celebration

The SCERA Center for the Arts will celebrate with a variety show. Performers will include SCERA staff member Shawn Mortensen, the Bluth Sisters, and the Mountain View High School choir. Visit for information.

Taylorsville parade and program

Taylorsville City and United Veterans Council will host a parade that begins at Valley Regional Park and ends at city hall. The co-grand marshals will be Sgt. Maj. Patrick N. Watkins, who served three tours of duty in Vietnam, and Sr. Master Sgt. Chuck Davis who served in both Korea and Vietnam. Visit for information.

Utah Department of Veterans Affairs program

The Utah Department of Veterans Affairs will hold a celebration at the state Capitol. Gov. Gary Herbert will speak and five veterans will be honored. The Utah National Guard's 23rd Army Band will perform. Visit for information.

American Festival Chorus

The American Festival Chorus will present a tribute hosted by Lt. Col. Gary Griffin, USAF retired. The concert features patriotic favorites as well as spiritual musical selections. American Festival Chorus, the Utah State University Symphony Orchestra, the USU American Legion, and the USU ROTC will perform. Visit for information.

Musical celebration

The American Fallen Warrior Memorial Foundation will celebrate with country singers Collin Raye and Nathan Osmond as well as Utah musician-composer Kurt Bestor. Musician Jeff Senour and the Utah Army Band and Choral Arts Society will join them. Visit for information.
