Sports briefs: Mike Trout, Bryce Harper earn Rookie of the Year honors

Baseball • Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals have been voted Rookies of the Year for their breakout seasons following late-April call-ups from the minor leagues.

Trout received all 28 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America's AL panel and was the eighth unanimous AL pick. The 21-year-old center fielder hit .326 with 30 homers and 83 RBIs following his call-up from the Salt Lake Bees in late April.

Harper, who turned 20 last month, got 16 of 32 first-place votes and 112 points from the NL panel. Arizona pitcher Wade Miley was second with 12 first-place votes and 105 points, followed by Cincinnati slugger Todd Frazier with three firsts and 45 points. Harper, called up from Triple-A Syracuse, finished the season with a .270 batting average, 22 home runs and 59 RBIs.

Rimando called up to national team

soccer • Real Salt Lake announced Monday that goalkeeper Nick Rimando has been called up to the U.S. national team for its friendly against Russia on Wednesday. Rimando is one of three goalkeepers on the U.S. roster, along with Everton's Tim Howard and the Chicago Fire's Sean Johnson. The U.S. will face Russia at Kuban Stadium in Krasnodar at 8 a.m. MST on Wednesday.

Vonn hospitalized in Colorado

skiing • Lindsey Vonn has been admitted to a hospital in Vail, Colo., with an undisclosed illness. Her spokesman, Lewis Kay, had no other updates on the U.S. skier's condition Monday. The four-time World Cup overall champion and part-time Park City resident skipped a slalom competition in Finland last weekend to prepare for upcoming races in Aspen.
