A West Valley City man allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend and beat her until she was unconscious, according to charges filed against the man on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old was charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and two counts of aggravated assault, respectively classified as a second-degree felony and a third-degree felony.

According to court documents, the man assaulted his girlfriend after she went to his residence to break up with him. He then kept her inside the house and refused to let her leave, court documents state. At one point, he allegedly strangled the woman after an attempted escape.

Court documents also cite a witness who told West Valley City police that she saw the couple walking in the middle of Redwood Road when she saw the defendant punch the woman in the head, causing her to collapse to the ground. The witness reported seeing the man drag the victim to the side of the road, straddle her and shake her.

The defendant was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and is held on a $300,000 bond.
