Utah basketball: Utes gain four recruits

Without playing a game, the Utah basketball program got a win on Wednesday.

Signing Day was a success, as all four Ute recruits sent in their letters of intent and were approved by the end of practice.

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak declined comment on his new players, as junior college guard Delon Wright's letter had yet to be faxed at the time. But Wright tweeted his official signing, and it was confirmed shortly after Krystkowiak spoke to the media.

Two local players — Parker Van Dyke from East High and Brandon Miller from Brighton — have signed with the Utes. Both are 6-foot-3 combination guards with scoring ability and the talent to run a team.

Marko Kovacevic, a 6-11 center, comes from Western Nebraska Community College. Wright, the younger brother of NBA forward Dorell Wright, is a 6-5 guard from San Francisco City College.

Those four add depth and athleticism to a team that potentially returns all but two seniors from the 2012 group. Miller and Van Dyke are both candidates to go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling in school. Wright is considered the gem of the class, with an ability to play all three perimeter positions.

The calm before

Friday's home matchup with Sacramento State begins a stretch of four games in eight days for Utah, its first flurry of games of the season.

"You look at that, and certainly you need the experience," Krystkowiak said. "We want to look at the next game for what it is. We can't look past anyone on the schedule, so we have to worry about what's ahead of us on Friday."

He's back

Krystkowiak said senior guard Jarred DuBois will play on Friday night, after missing last week's game against Willamette with a hip injury.

DuBois, a transfer from Loyola Marymount, returned to practice on Monday after missing a full week.

"I'm not sure whether he'll start or not, but he will play," Krystkowiak said. "That's the nice thing. We have a lot of different directions we can go, and a lot of combinations we can use."
