Re "Utah food tax could skyrocket " (Tribune, Nov. 14) and "Corroon proposes raising Salt Lake County property tax 17.5%" (Tribune, Nov. 9):
Is it just a coincidence, or were public announcements of proposals for hikes in the state food tax and county property tax deliberately delayed until after the election? Was there even a murmur of pending tax hikes by any of the political candidates?
No one likes tax hikes, but this conspiracy of silence suggests a lack of trust in the electorate's ability to face difficult choices. The tax hikes may be necessary, but we would feel better about them if we were provided an honest pre-election presentation of the issues
