In the wake of the presidential election, people across the country, including Utah, are signing petitions to secede from the Union. I can't think of anything more unpatriotic than signing such a petition.
We all want the freedom to live our lives as we choose (which means my freedoms shouldn't infringe on your rights, and vice versa), a good job that can support a family and great schools for our children. No Democrat or Republican wants to burden future generations with enormous debt.
For individuals who feel our country is going straight to hell: Make a positive contribution to your community.
Turn off the TV and volunteer to help a neighbor. Volunteer to sit on the PTA board or manage the finances for your township. Paint over graffiti or be a frequent visitor in your kids' classes.
Go back to school and become more marketable. There are great jobs out there if you have the qualifications.
Not only are these activities patriotic, but you will improve our country by setting a positive example for the next generation. Caring about our country means doing more than complaining about it.
