Apple Store at Utah's City Creek opens Saturday

The Apple Store in downtown Salt Lake City is officially moving out of The Gateway mall and will re-open at City Creek Center on Main Street at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The move is the latest blow to The Gateway, which sits just four blocks west of City Creek and has lost more than a dozen stores to the newer outdoor shopping mall at 50 S. Main Street. City Creek Center is managed and owned by Michigan-based Taubman Centers Inc., and is part of the larger City Creek development that includes residential units and office space. The property is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Apple Store at City Creek is one of two such electronics stores in Utah owned and operated by Apple. The other is at Fashion Place Mall in Murray. The stores sell Apple hardware and software, including the iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook Pro laptops. The Gateway store opened in November 2005 and broke its lease to move to City Creek.

City Creek also is expected to get a new Microsoft retail store that will sell Windows-based PCs and software. Although that location has not been officially announced by Microsoft, the company's website has revealed a list of job openings for the store and a building permit was filed earlier this year. It is unknown when it will open.
