Strength, heart, determination: That is high school football, and Utah's state championship contenders were the perfect exemplars of all three on Friday in their battles for the 3A, 4A, and 5A titles at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Jordan Beetdiggers finished a season of domination in their 58-2 win over the Syracuse Titans, beating every in-state opponent this year. In 4A action, as if a state championship weren't dramatic enough, Timpview and Mountain Crest fought into double overtime, but the Thunderbirds endured, edging the Mustangs 38-31, thanks to a late sack by Timpview lineman Pita Taumoepenu. And the 3A championship game belonged to Dixie quarterback Blake Barney, who racked up 472 total yards to carry the Flyers over the Spanish Fork Dons, 49-21.
