Re "Utah food tax could skyrocket" (Tribune, Nov. 15):
When we had the food sales tax at 4.75 percent it was a fair tax. Everyone had to pay it, equally. The governor, state senators and representatives had to pay. The poor had to pay. A single person like me had to pay. People with four kids paid.
When the food sales tax was cut under Gov. Jon Huntsman, Utah also got a flatter state income tax.
Now the proposal is for a new food sales tax, but with refundable credits for the poor. This is very dumb.
It's simple. Tax everyone equally on food. No credits. No exceptions.
