In Ireland, a woman died needlessly because doctors refused an abortion while she was having a miscarriage until the fetal heartbeat had stopped, even though it was clear beforehand the fetus would die.
Irish law is unclear about when an abortion can be performed when the life of the mother is in danger. Doctors are afraid for fear of prosecution, and politicians refuse to clarify the law for fear of the Catholic Church.
If Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, Utah has laws on its books to immediately outlaw abortions under almost all circumstances. During the recent presidential election, some candidates, including Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, favored a strict ban that could lead to outcomes like the one in Ireland, where religion and politics mix uneasily.
Beware of politicians, almost all of them older males, who are driven by religious fervor to impose certain moral concepts on others, especially in the realm of women's health. They even claim superior knowledge of health issues over actual experts. The outcome can prove fatal.
