Mormons in Congress

I was taken aback by the front-page story "17 Mormons will serve in next Congress" (Tribune, Nov. 16). Where else but in Salt Lake City would we see such a headline? I want to know how many Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Baptists, Seventh Day Aventists, Greek Orthodox, Jehovah's Witnesses or agnostics are in Congress.

Surely, we have more important "news" for the front page. Why do we need an article like this in the first place? Is having more Mormons in Congress a good thing? Are there enough Mormons in Congress? And most important, why would we care?

What difference does the religion of a member of Congress make? Maybe that is the real point.
