BYU basketball coach Dave Rose hinted a few weeks ago that his team would play in one of those prestigious eight-team college basketball tournaments in the near future. Tuesday, BYU fans learned what Rose was possibly talking about. BYU has been invited to play in the 2014 EA Sports Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The Cougars have been to the Maui Invitational twice, in 1992 and in 2004. Other teams invited to the field include Missouri, Kansas State, San Diego State, Purdue, Arizona, Pittsburgh and Chaminade, the host school. In case you missed it, Chaminade upset Texas last night in this year's Maui Invitational. "The 2014 field promises to be a great one," said tournament director Dave Odom. "With accomplished programs in Arizona, Missouri, Purdue and Pittsburgh and emerging teams including BYU and San Diego State, the 2014 tournament will feature fierce competition." The tournament will be held Nov. 25-27, 2014. "This is one of the deepest and most-talented fields we've ever had," Odom said. A quick check of the BYU football schedule for 2014 shows, unfortunately, that the Cougars will play host to Hawaii in Provo on Oct. 18. BYU plays at Hawaii in 2013, on Dec. 7.
