A Cottonwood Heights man likely will face charges after firing a pistol round through the wall of his apartment and into a neighbor child's bedroom.

Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said the incident took place 11 p.m. at the Santa Fe Apartments, near 1550 Fort Union Boulevard.

The man, who allegedly had been drinking and smoking marijuana, attempted to load a 9mm bullet into a 40-caliber pistol and it fired. "He's lucky the gun didn't explode, too," Askerlund said.

The bullet went through the wall, into the child's bedroom, through a toy chest and into an adjacent room before lodging in furniture. No one was hurt.

Askerlund said the investigation was ongoing, but it was likely the man would be charged with reckless endangerment and intoxication.
