It may not rank up there with the holiday lights on Temple Square, but the Utah State Archives is planning a big event this week.

The archives will conduct an open house at its new records center in Clearfield Thursday. The event starts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m., and the public is invited to tour the center, located in a former Internal Revenue Service building in the Freeport Center.

The new center replaces the center in West Valley City, which the state has outgrown. The West Valley City building was also located on a flood plain, which is not the best place to store public records.

The state began moving 120,000 cubic feet of documents in January, and reopened the center in March. The building can contain 175,000 cubic feet of records.
