Carbon County man sentenced in Wellington rape

A Carbon County man will spend at least 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to breaking into a Wellington apartment and raping a woman in January.

Dwaine Stacey Shaw, 22, pleaded guilty in October in 7th District Court to first-degree felony counts of aggravated burglary, rape, forcible sodomy and aggravated kidnapping. As part of a plea deal, two other first-degree felony charges were dropped.

On Tuesday, Judge Douglas Thomas sentenced Shaw to spend at least 15 years in prison on the kidnapping charge. He also sentenced Shaw to spend five years in prison for each of the other charges, though he ruled those charges can be served concurrently.

On Jan. 13, the Wellington woman reported a masked man broke into her apartment and raped her. DNA evidence collected from the crime scene later identified Shaw as the perpetrator.
