Two women died Tuesday in a head-on crash in Tooele County.

The accident occurred at 4:02 p.m. on State Road 36 at 8793 N. Lakepoint in front of a Chevron gas station, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Two females in the same vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, but their identities were not immediately released.

Their vehicle was going north on SR36 when they suddenly braked for a second vehicle, causing a third vehicle further back to rear-end them. The impact pushed their vehicle into the southbound lanes, where they were struck head-on by a fourth vehicle.

The vehicle that caused the females to brake in the first place fled the scene. UHP did not have a description of it.

Someone in one of the other vehicles was also critically injured, said UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson.

The incident shut down Exit 99 for westbound lanes and troopers routed traffic through Grantsville, until the exit reopened a few hours later.
