It is good to finally see some semblance of sanity surface as legislators begin to grapple with the consequence of Mitt Romney's defeat. Specifically, that we, the great unwashed, really do accept that taxes may need to increase.

Conservative activist Grover Norquist and his anti-new-tax pledge appear to be headed to the great economic scrap heap, which no doubt contains Arthur Laffer of supply-side economics fame.

To attempt to eliminate the major economic tool of revenue flexibility from the U.S. toolbox is a disastrous mistake.

We must now guard against similar zealots, including Sens. Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch, whose agendas include a balanced budget amendment.

To similarly remove the economic tool of deficit budgeting would be even more disastrous for our country.
