Seven people were left homeless but escaped serious injury in a late Wednesday night fire that heavily damaged a two-story, four-unit residence in Ogden.

Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bauman said three of the occupants were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of the 9:30 p.m. blaze at 2769 S. Liberty Ave. Damage was estimated in excess of $100,000.

Arriving firefighters found smoke and flames billowing from the rear of the structure. "The fire grew in size very rapidly and extended to the upstairs portion of the home including the roof structure," Bauman said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the two families affected by the fire with food, shelter and clothing needs.

Bauman said the cause of the fire remained undetermined and the Ogden fire marshal's investigation was ongoing.
