After winning a state championship with Jordan High football, quarterback Austin Kafentzis is starting to get some big-time recognition for his on-field achievements.

The sophomore was named Utah's Gatorade football player of the year for leading the Beetdiggers to a 12-1 title-winning season. Kafentzis threw for 3,018 yards, ran for 1,884 yards and accounted for 58 total touchdowns. Against Copper Hills, he tied the state record by throwing 8 TD passes in a game.

Perhaps the most telling statistic of his dominance was Jordan's 58-2 score in the state championship game against Syracuse.

It's likely the first of several honors for Kafentzis, who was Maxpreps.com's national freshman of the year last season. With a championship ring and two seasons ahead, things are looking bright for the quarterback.

A news release from Gatorade also cited his volunteer work and 3.85 GPA as reasons for his selection.
