World AIDS Day was marked in Salt Lake City with lights and music during a ceremony on the west side of the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State St.
"We are proud to be part of a worldwide effort to increase awareness, provide education and demonstrate compassion for those affected by HIV/AIDS," said a statement from Mayor Becker. "As a community, we have a responsibility to work toward breaking misconceptions about this disease. That effort begins with knowledge and understanding."
The event included remarks by community activist Robert "Archie" Archuleta; musical selections from the Rowland Hall Choir; a performance by classical guitarist Michael Lucarelli; and a special lighting of hundreds of luminaries.
In Utah, more than 2,600 people are reported to be living with HIV.
