Crews douse fire at Sandy business | The Salt Lake Tribune

Sandy firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze at Superior Buck and Steel Friday.

Public safety dispatchers said the call came in about 2 p.m. of smoke and flames pouring from the second story of the business at 8685 S. 700 West.

Sandy Battalion Chief Derek Maxfield said a forklift in one of the part of the building had caught fire, causing black smoke to pour out of a nearby bay door. The machine also leaked diesel fuel that caught fire on the floor, but Maxfield said the damage to the building itself was mostly smoke-related. He estimated the damage at $20,000 to $25,000.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigators believe it was likely accidental, Maxfield said.

Workers in the building were evacuated as firefighters put the flames out, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters were initially concerned with acetylene and propane tanks believed stored inside the structure.
