Sandy • The Major League Soccer offseason trade window opens Monday and, according to a national website, Real Salt Lake will be one of the first teams to start dealing.
Soccer by Ives reported Sunday night that RSL plans to start a long-expected shake-up of its roster by sending defender Jamison Olave and forward Fabian Espindola to the New York Red Bulls.
In a separate deal, Real Salt Lake will send midfielder Will Johnson to the Portland Timbers.
By trading Olave, Espindola and Johnson, Real Salt Lake will save $1 million in salary while also generating more than $500,000 in allocation money, according to Soccer by Ives.
Olave, Espindola and Johnson have helped form RSL's foundation for years, but general manager Garth Lagerwey talked as early as last summer about the possible need to change the roster after the season.
Real Salt Lake's season ended when it failed to score in a two-game aggregate playoff series against Seattle and lost, 1-0.
