Lucky to be alive? Sandy man critical after 100-140 mph crash

A 41-year-old Sandy man was in critical condition Tuesday morning, just hours after he lost control of his speeding car on an Interstate 215 curve and crashed near 6200 South.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey said witnesses estimated the man was driving "well in excess of 100 mph," and possibly as fast as 140 mph, when his southbound Audi A4-2 careened into the median and struck a barrier wall at 12:58 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected into the northbound lanes; his car came to a rest on the southbound side of the wall.

The driver, who was suspected of driving while intoxicated, was taken by ambulance to the hospital and reportedly underwent surgery early Tuesday morning.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

UHP closed down lanes in both directions for several hours while they investigated and wreckage was cleared.
