Prosecutors to review possible charges in Tooele County double fatal

Utah Highway Patrol investigators will soon meet with prosecutors to screen possible charges against a teen driver thought to have been the catalyst for a double-fatal, multi-vehicle crash in Tooele County last month.

UHP Sgt. Ted Tingey said Wednesday that interviews with the 16-year-old boy and witnesses to the Nov. 27 accident on State Road 36 at 8793 N. Lakepoint had been completed.

"Our investigators are hoping to wrap this up by this weekend and then submit possible charges to the Tooele County Attorney's Office to consider sometime next week," Tingey said.

By some witness accounts, the boy's black SUV drove onto the roadway suddenly, causing Sloane F. Ackman to suddenly brake, triggering two more collisions.

The teen had driven away from the scene by the time troopers arrived, but later contacted UHP after hearing troopers wanted to talk to him about the accident.

Ackman, 49, and her daughter, Trista S. Ackman, 29, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Ackmans were driving their station wagon northbound on SR-36 at 4 p.m. when they suddenly braked and were rear-ended by a truck; the impact propelled the Ackmans' car head-on into a southbound SUV.

Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, the UHP said.
