The Norquist pledge

After reading that Utah's Republican politicians would rather honor a pledge they made to conservative activist Grover Norquist than work to solve our country's fiscal problems, I am disappointed and frustrated ("Utah's Republicans in Congress stick to no-tax pledge" (Tribune, Nov. 30).
Norquist is an unelected person who believes that taxes of any kind should not be raised. In the face of mounting budget deficits and the approaching "fiscal cliff," all options should be considered.
Our Republican politicians should face the reality that Americans do not want cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.
