Sports briefs: Cal names Sonny Dykes as new coach

College football • Sonny Dykes pulled out a white California cap from underneath the podium and popped it on his head to accent his blue-and-gold tie and dark suit.

On his first day as Cal's coach, Dykes definitely looked the part.

Cal formally introduced Dykes as its new head coach Thursday, replacing the fired Jeff Tedford after three years at Louisiana Tech. Dykes said the past two days have been a whirlwind waiting to learn the outcome of the search "but I'll look back and say that was the best 48 hours of my life."

• Brian Kelly of Notre Dame has won Coach of the Year at the Home Depot College Football Awards show at Disney World.

Kelly received the award Thursday night. He becomes the first two-time winner, having previously received the honor in 2009 while he was at Cincinnati.

Larsen's perfect game uniform sold

MLB • The uniform Don Larsen was wearing when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history has sold for $756,000.

The former New York Yankees' right-hander achieved perfection in Game 5 of the 1956 Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The pinstriped uniform with No. 18 on the back received 22 bids in an online auction on Steinersports.com. The winning bidder was Pete Siegel, CEO of GottaHaveIt.com.

Schwartzel leads in Thailand tourney

Golf • South Africa's Charl Schwartzel shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Thailand Golf Championship in Chon Buri.

Winless since the 2011 Masters, Schwartzel had seven birdies in a bogey-free round at Amata Spring.
