Grade • A-

DVD • Mike Birbiglia is at his best when he's talking to you one-to-one — as he's shown in his stand-up comedy, his appearances on public radio's "This American Life" and his movie debut, "Sleepwalk With Me."

Birbiglia (who directed and co-wrote) plays a slightly fictionalized version of himself, a struggling comic who deals with wavering feelings for his girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose) while also discovering he has a sleep disorder in which he physically acts out his dreams, sometimes leading to dangerous situations.

The movie's low-budget scruffiness is a good match for Birbiglia's slouchy Everyman persona, and his confessional to-the-camera monologues bring out his comic gifts. —
