Re "Republican opposition downs U.N. disability treaty" (Tribune, Dec. 5):

In the past, my country, the United States of America, has been a beacon to the world in promoting human rights. I have traveled the world and I have been proud of those efforts and their effects.

Today, I am disappointed that my nation failed to continue that effort with the U.S. Senate's rejection of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was modeled after the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

In particular, it is embarrassing to have two senators from my home state of Utah not only participate in such senselessness, but lead it.
