South Salt Lake police have taken a teenage girl into custody after she allegedly stabbed her mother multiple times Tuesday during an apparent domestic dispute.

The stabbing occurred after the 16-year-old got into an argument with her mother about school work, according to Officer Gary Keller. Three adults in the house and the girl's sibling witnessed the stabbing, he said. Keller said the girl was booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Police were called just before 3 p.m. Tuesday to an address on the 300 block of East Lambourne Avenue (3155 South).

Keller said the 40-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after being stabbed in the upper body three times with a large kitchen knife.

Keller said the woman was conscious at the time she was transported.

The girl's name was not released by police because she is a juvenile, Keller said.
