Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Dwayne Baird encouraged drivers to not only use seat belts, but to refuse to drive unless all passengers do the same ("Buckle up — UHP troopers on the lookout for seat belts," Tribune, Dec. 6).

I have been troubled by the number of recent auto accidents where unbuckled adult parents were ejected and killed, while their belted-in children survived. Why do parents neglect their own safety?

When will we learn that good parenting includes protecting ourselves so our precious children can grow up with a mom and dad?
