Organizers are asking people to sign up or volunteer for a 5k this Saturday to help the family of a South Jordan middle school teacher who was struck and killed while jogging to work.
Longtime Elk Ridge Middle School physical education teacher Randy Treglown died Nov. 28 after being hit by a pickup truck.
The race to help his wife and children starts at Elk Ridge Middle School, 9800 S. 3659 West, at 9 a.m. Registration costs $20 for the timed 5k and $15 for the 5k that isn't. All proceeds from the 5k go to the Randy Treglown Memorial Fund at Jordan Credit Union.
Online registration closes Thursday night, but organizers will accept on-site registration the morning of the race until 8:30 a.m.
People are also encouraged to donate directly to the fund or sign up for the race, even if they don't plan to run, as a form of donation.
To promote runner safety, organizers are handing out free reflective vests to the first 1,000 runners who sign up. It was dark at the time of the crash and Treglown was jogging alone, wearing black pants and a dark green shirt, and the driver told police that he ran a red light and did not see the teacher.
