In "LDS and gays" (Forum, Dec. 12), Steve Howard is disgusted with the LDS position on gays, "that being gay is a disability the same way being an alcoholic is."

News flash for Steve: Membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is voluntary. It doesn't take a genius to see the unfortunate reality that, like oil and water, gay couples and LDS theology do not mix.

Fortunately, the solution for Steve and his friends is simple: If you do not like LDS religion, find or create a theology that resonates with your core values.

No amount of whining will change an apple into an orange, and persistent pounding will not get a square peg through a round hole.
