Sports briefs: Big East non-football schools consider leaving

College sports • The seven Big East schools that don't play FBS football spoke with the conference commissioner Thursday about possibly breaking from a league that has been drastically reshaped. Such a breakup would be complicated and could conceivably kill the Big East.

Commissioner Mike Aresco conferred by phone with the leaders of those seven schools, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated press because of the sensitivity of the discussions.

Twins, Correia finalize 2-year deal

MLB • The Minnesota Twins have finalized a $10 million, two-year contract with right-hander Kevin Correia to fill a rotation spot after their starters posted the MLB's second-worst ERA last season.

The 32-year-old, an All-Star in 2011, went 12-11 with a 4.21 ERA for Pittsburgh this year.

• Outfielder Andres Torres is returning to the San Francisco Giants, agreeing Thursday to a $2 million, one-year contract.

Torres must pass a physical to finalize the deal, Giants vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans said.

Torres spent last season with the New York Mets.

RSL midfielder Gil called up to U-20

Soccer • Real Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil has been called up to the U.S. Under-20 National Team for a week of training later this month.

But RSL officials don't expect that will be the 19-year-old's only time away with the U-20s. Gil will likely miss most, if not all, of the team's preseason training.

The CONCACAF U-20 Championship is set for Feb. 18 through March 3 in Mexico. RSL's first regular-season match will likely be scheduled for the weekend of March 2.
