A 28-year-old man was taken to a Salt Lake City area hospital in critical condition on Friday after jumping from the roof of the downtown library, city fire officials said.
The man jumped from the northwest corner of the building just before 6 p.m., said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jason Asay.
Emergency crews found the man injured and semiconscious when they arrived at the scene, Asay said.
Library spokeswoman Julianne Hancock said a security officer saw the man on the building's rooftop garden, and saw him begin to jump, but couldn't reach him in time to stop him.
No one at the library had any interaction with the man prior to the incident, she said.
The man's name was not immediately released. The incident remains under investigation, Asay said.
