White Sox hire ex-BYU coach Law

Baseball • Former BYU player and coach Vance Law has joined the minor league staff of the Chicago White Sox as special assistant to player development. Law played 11 seasons in the majors as a third baseman and was with the White Sox from 1982-84. A former star shortsop at BYU, he coached the Cougars for 13 season before he was fired in May with a 397-347-2 career record.

• Pitcher John Lannan signed a $2.5 million, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Lannan was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA in six starts for Washington this year.

• The Boston Red Sox reached a $9.5 million, one-year deal with shortstop Stephen Drew, who hit .250 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 39 games for Oakland last season after being traded by Arizona on Aug. 20.

Associated Press honors Manziel

college football • Chalk up another major award for Johnny Manziel. The Texas A&M quarterback became the first freshman to be voted The Associated Press Player of the Year in college football on Tuesday. He also won the Heisman Trophy and Davey O'Brien Award. Manziel collected 31 votes to 15 for Manti Te'o, Notre Dame's star linebacker, who finished second.

The 6-foot-1 Manziel threw for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores.

U.S. to face Canada in exhibition

soccer • The U.S. soccer team will open its 2013 schedule with an exhibition game against Canada at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium on Jan. 29. The Americans will hold a training camp from Jan. 14-27 in Carson, Calif. Seeking their seventh straight World Cup appearance, the Americans open the final round of World Cup qualifying Feb. 6 against Honduras at San Pedro Sula.

• Sporting Kansas City has acquired Argentine forward Claudio Bieler as a designated player, adding a talented goal-scorer from Ecuador's Serie A to its roster. The 28-year-old Bieler was acquired by the MLS club from LDU Quito for an undisclosed transfer fee.
