Could Big East bring more trouble for Utah State?

At some point, Aggies fans will stop reeling. But unfortunately, it might not be anytime soon.

The Big East is continuing to go after Mountain West Conference schools in football. CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd reported Tuesday afternoon that the Big East has been in touch with Fresno State and UNLV, gauging their interest in joining the conference in football only.

Of course, this would be a huge hit to the Mountain West if those schools ultimately decided to abandon ship. The conference is already losing Boise State and San Jose State next summer. When the Big East lost its seven Catholic schools last week, it appeared the conference was in less position to hawk schools from other areas, but the lure of TV deals can make a lot of programs stop and listen.

Utah State is planning to join the Mountain West next year. Still, the MWC will be more solid than the Western Athletic Conference, which today added University of Texas Pan-American to its fold for next year.

In the best of all worlds for Utah State, the Big East's efforts to reach to the West Coast would prove unfruitful and perhaps Boise and San Jose would come slinking back to the MWC. But in the realignment shuffle, money still talks, and even a weakened Big East could have some television leverage.
