Salt Lake City police say they stopped a homeless man from walking out of the downtown library with 47 books and DVDs in his coat.

The 60-year-old man was charged Wednesday with library theft, a misdemeanor, and a felony count of possession of a controlled substance in 3rd District Court.

On Monday, a patron of the library at 210 E. 400 South told a security guard that the man was leaving with library property, according to the charges. The guard stopped him and found the collection of books and DVDs, valued at $610, in his coat pockets.

Before he was booked into Salt Lake County jail, a police officer also found a plastic bag of methamphetamine in the man's jacket pocket, the charges add.
