Utah forecast: Fiery Mayan end? Nope, just more cold

Well, we're still here. No extinction-level meteor strikes or mass volcanic eruptions to warm us, however briefly, before oblivion's embrace. Stupid Mayan calendar.

However, when it comes to predictions, Utah, you can count on this: It's going to be cold, again, on Saturday.

Factoring in the wind chill from 10-20 mph breezes expected along the Wasatch Front, overnight low temperatures, expected to range in the upper-teens, will feel like the low single-digits. Afternoon highs will be in the low- to mid-40s.

Southern Utahns have it better for Saturday, with highs in the upper-40s to low-50s after overnight lows below freezing.

Eastern Utah, though, will really be in the deep freeze early Saturday morning: Duchesne expects a -2 on the thermometer, and again with wind chill figured in, if you decide to take a stroll under the stars and in the shadow of the Uintas it will feel like -15 to -20.

The Utah Avalanche Center rated the mountains near Salt Lake City, Ogden, Logan and Provo at having "moderate" risks for dangerous backcountry snow slides.

At least, as you shiver, you will be able to take a deep breath. The Utah Division of Air Quality has given its "Green," or healthy breathability grade for monitoring districts statewide.

Salt Lake City looks for a high of 46 on Saturday in the wake of an overnight low of 21 and Friday's forecast for a 43-degree high; Ogden expected 43, 20 and 40 degrees, respectively; Provo 44, 18 and 43; Logan 40, 10 and 37; Wendover 41, 16 and 35; Duchesne 34, -2 and 27; Cedar City 43, 5 and 42; St. George 53, 28 and 49; and Moab 37, 8 and 31 degrees.
